Couples and Family Therapy
Evidence-based psychological therapies for couples and families play a central role in improving communication, resolving conflict, and strengthening relationships. These approaches are grounded in scientific research, ensuring that interventions are effective and tailored to the needs of the family unit or couple. Common evidence-based models include Cognitive Behavioural Couple Therapy (CBCT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Systemic Family Therapy. Each of these emphasises not only reducing symptoms of distress but also nurturing healthier patterns of interaction.
CBCT helps couples identify unhelpful thinking styles and behaviours, teaching practical strategies to manage disagreements and increase mutual support. EFT focuses on attachment and emotional bonds, enabling partners or family members to express vulnerability and respond with empathy, thereby deepening trust. Systemic Family Therapy looks at relationship dynamics across the whole family, recognising that difficulties often arise from circular patterns of interaction rather than an individual’s problem.
Evidence shows that these therapies can improve relationship satisfaction, reduce rates of conflict, and enhance wellbeing for adults and children alike. Importantly, they also provide protective benefits against relapse in mental health difficulties such as depression or anxiety. By fostering stronger connections, couples and family therapy not only resolve immediate issues but also support resilience and long-term relational health.
